Gaucin is a spectacularly beautiful mountain village commanding sweeping views to Gibraltar and North Africa. The village is a gateway to the Serranía de Ronda where, depending on the time of year, you can enjoy an impressionist palette of colour: brilliant brush strokes of red poppies, yellow mimosa, purple wild orchids, tempered by the cool green of olive groves and occasional splash of pale pink almond blossom. Indeed, Gaucin is famous for its international artists’ community.

The town has a population of less than 2,000, and its narrow medieval streets and tall, narrow houses are sprawled picturesquely over two hills and the adjoining land between them. Perched high above the deep River Genal valley, Gaucin is overlooked by the imposing the Sierra del Hacho mountain. The village is 626m above sea level.

As you would expect from the name, it is not unusual to see eagles circling the towers here, and kestrels nest in the walls of the convent. Gaucin, like many other birding sites in this part of Andalucia, has plaques around the town showing both native and migrating birds which can be seen in the vicinity.

During the months of April, May, June and October you are more than likely to enjoy temperatures between 20 and 25 degrees Celsius. The warmest time to visit is from July to mid-September when temperatures average around 28 degrees. (visitgaucin.com)

Annual events and fiesta (please look on-line for specific dates, as they fluctuate year to year)

May: “LA TOMA DE GAUCÍN POR LOS FRANCESES” – Gaucin celebrates the expulsion of the French (1810-1812) with a weekend long reenactment! Highlights include the imprisonment of the Alcalde (mayor) on Saturday and the battle for emancipation on Sunday.

May: Ronda:Ronda Romantica – historical reenactment of the expulsion of the French. All the villages in the Serrania de Ronda send a delegation of costumed representatives, who march through the city and battle the French!

May/June: Art Gaucin – a long standing art fair spanning two weekends. Enjoy open studios and exhibitions featuring Gaucin’s renowned artists. Generally the last and first weekends of May/June.

June: Romaria de San Juan – the weekend near June 24th – A fiesta for everyone! Music, food and horses. Don’t make plans for the following day!

July: Semana Cultural – A week of cultural activities and Music. Mid to late July

July: Flamenco Festival – One or two nights of top tier flamenco held in the plaza free of charge and very well attended.  

August: Gaucin Faria – Every town has Feria and ours falls in the first week of August! A long weekend of parades, music, dancing, bumper cars, food and events, hosted at the Faria Grounds across town. Highlights include the opening precession, Flamenca fashion show, games on horseback and musical guests and DJs. Expect to see lots of traditional Modo Flamenca and town pride! Faria goes all night but we miraculously can’t hear it!

August: Romaria de Adelfilla – The final Sunday in august, a beautiful pilgrimage to the towns shrine including a rociera (flamenco) mass and a party.

September: Fiesta Del Santa Nino – Final Fiesta of the summer in honor of the town’s patron Santa Nino. Highlights include a solemn procession through town featuring the villages Pasos (elaborate float made for religious processions) and a Fiesta in the plaza (entrance may be charged)

September: Ronda: Pedro Ramirez Festival & The Goyesca – generally held the first full weekend in September, a vibrant celebration located in and around the historical Ronda Bull Ring. Highlights include displays by the Royal Calvary Order, an exhibition of historic carriages driven by teams of beautifully costumed participants and the two day historic ‘Corrida Goyesca’ bullfight.
